What was your path to mental healthcare?
My path to mental health care was very serendipitous! When I first graduated with my BSN many moons ago, I had no interest in psychiatry. After seven years of ER nursing, I moved to a new state and took a job as a "unit nurse" at a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children. That's where I fell in love with psych.
How will this scholarship help you?
The scholarship would be beneficial to me as a networking experience; I am especially interested in patient advocacy and facilitating legislative change. Additionally, the experience would expose me to the different facets of being a mental health provider, discover where the most MH needs lie and provide education to be a better PMHNP which is the ultimate goal.
What are your academic and/or career goals?
I am currently a PMHNP resident at the VA of Southern Nevada. The VA is challenging because of all its antiquated "processes" especially its electronic medical record system. However, working with vets is extremely rewarding, and it's the least I can do for them after everything they have sacrificed for this country. I also love working with children and teens; they have so much promise. I have learned not to exclude any career paths and I stay open minded to everything.
What does “exceptional patient care” mean to you?
Exceptional patient care means patient centered care and empathy, of course, but it is so much more. I think it's important (especially in psych) to be a relatable provider. Patients are revealing their darkest thoughts and need to feel safe to do so. Also, advocacy is HUGE to combat mental illness stigma.
